I AM: KLOFAMA: The Rise of a New Hardtechno Generation

I AM: KLOFAMA: The Rise of a New Hardtechno Generation

In the short documentary I AM: KLOFAMA, production company CULT. follows DJ andproducer Mats van Biljouw (23) during the year in which his life accelerates at an unprecedented pace.

Three years ago, Mats van Biljouw played his first tracks to friends from his bedroom in Horst, Limburg. Today, he travels the world as KLOFAMA, performs for thousands of people on major international stages, and has rapidly become one of the standout faces of the new generation of hardtechno.

But who is Mats when the lights go out?

In I AM: KLOFAMA, director Sten Hoeijmakers (CULT. Productions) follows Mats during a year in which his career explodes, from airports, hotel rooms and backstage areas to his childhood home in Horst, where he still returns. The contrast is striking. On stage, KLOFAMA is part of a world where everything seems to be getting faster, bigger and more intense. Away from the spotlight, he is still Mats: the boy from Horst who grew up in an environment where keeping your feet on the ground is simply the norm.

I AM: KLOFAMA is not only about Mats’ rise as an artist, but about what happens when your identity changes faster than you can keep up with yourself. How do you stay true to yourself when thousands of people know a version of you that has grown larger than who you really are? What does international recognition do to someone who still comes home to his parents? And what happens when ambition, performance pressure, constant travel and success start piling up at an accelerating pace?

The documentary reveals sides of Mats that the public never sees: sitting at the kitchen table, spending time with friends who knew him before KLOFAMA, driving through his hometown, and having conversations in which the façade can briefly come down and feelings of doubt, loneliness or relief become tangible. KLOFAMA’s rise also illustrates just how fundamentally the music industry has changed. Where artists once needed years to break through from a local scene, a new generation can now reach a global audience in a remarkably short period of time through social media and a distinctive sound.

I Am: Klofama: The Rise Of A New Hardtechno Generation

Mats is a striking example of this. What started with making music in his bedroom has developed within just a few years into an international career as an artist. During that time, he has performed at some of Europe’s biggest hardtechno and electronic music platforms, including Blackworks, Verknipt, Rotterdam Rave and Teletech, and has also appeared at the iconic Johan Cruijff ArenA. In addition, over the past two years he has sold out multiple all-night-long shows both in the Netherlands and abroad, demonstrating how quickly he has evolved from an emerging talent into an artist capable of independently attracting large audiences internationally.

That speed makes the documentary relevant not only to KLOFAMA and hardtechno fans, but to anyone who wants to understand what it means to suddenly find yourself living a very public life at a young age.

I AM: KLOFAMA is currently in production and is expected to premiere in mid-2027.
