EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Tell us about the first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since. How did you get started?

I would have to say it was a song called Enter Oblivion from my debut EP. This song is a 3-way collaboration between me, and my friends JJ KiND and 12hythm. It’s about how we as a species continually repeat the mistakes of the past – and if we don’t learn from history, we are doomed to suffer and fail as a society. And ultimately, we will be doomed to “enter oblivion”. That EP was really the beginning of everything for me. After that release, people started showing some interest in my original tracks and it gave me more original content for playing at shows too.

Tell us about your latest project ‘Critical Mass’.

Critical Mass is about space, time and matter…. and it’s also the name of my favorite strain of cannabis, so there’s a dual-meaning to it. It’s super chill and vibey and something that you could play in the car, or studying, or working out and just drift away. It was originally going to be the first song on my debut full-length album, but as I got into it, it took on a direction and vibe of its own – so I decided to release it as a single instead.

Tell us something we wouldn’t normally find out about you?

I’m a sports fanatic!!! Not a fan… a fanatic! I have a seriously unhealthy obsession with the teams that I follow/root for. I might need to seek help. 😉

What single night out has been most memorable for you as a dj and producer?

About a year ago I played my first festival called “Legends of Bigfoot Festival” outside of my hometown of Whitefish, MT. It was my first time playing an hour-long set, and my first time playing a “headlining” set time, and it was AMAZING!!! That was the day that I really started believing in myself, and it pushed forward the trajectory of my career and my confidence as a performer.

Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?

GodLovesUgly. Both the original track by Atmosphere, and the remix by Zeds Dead x Subtronices.

Dream collaboration and why?

Zeds Dead!! Hands down!!! They have always been one of my biggest inspirations/influences, and they’re one of the main reasons why I got into dubstep and bass music in the first place. It would be a dream come true if I ever got to collab with them or play with them. Also, it would sound and look really cool because of our names. I mean, “Zeds Dead x DeddShot on Deadbeats”…. can’t get much better than that!!

If you could play any festival, which would it be?

Bass Canyon at The Gorge.

How do you get a track started? tell us about your production process

I usually start with drums and a super simple melody to just find a direction and flow. Once I get a tempo and a basic beat locked in, I start working on basslines, rhythm/flow and dynamics. Then… down the rabbit hole I go!

Upcoming projects? What are you currently working on?

Since January, I’ve released a 4 song EP, and 4 singles – so I decided to dedicate most of the summer season to playing/attending as many shows and festivals as I can. That said, I have started working on my debut full length album that I’m calling “Dust To Ashes”. I’m in the beginning stages of that process, but toward the end of summer, I’m committing 100% of my time and focus on the album. I’m hoping to have it ready for release right around the beginning of 2022!

The relationship between a dj and the audience is crucial, and yet is seems to be a fragile one – how do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?

It’s all about the vibes!!! I LOVE the give and take between the crowd and the performer – and reciprocating the energy between both parties is essential! I’m newer to performing as a dj, but I’ve been playing music in front of people for over 10 years (in bands), so I’m no stranger to stage presence and feeding off of each other’s energy. But it is a delicate balance. I’ll always stay true to myself and my sound/style… but you still have to give the people what they want. Finding that perfect blend is definitely a task, but it makes the experience that much more fulfilling!
