Exclusive Interview with Talented Irish DJ & Producer Ryan Ennis

Fast rising Irish producer and DJ Ryan Ennis has shown us exactly what he’s made of this year with his stellar release ‘Close’. Fast becoming a club favorite, the single was also featured in this year’s Love Island UK. Check out our exclusive interview below!

Sharing his first tracks during the midst of the pandemic, Ryan fell in love with producing and dived headfirst into it. Having racked up 4 million Soundcloud streams on his viral smash ‘Lick Your Lips’ alongside millions more on his tracks ‘That Girl’, ‘Take It Back’ and his remix of ‘Joys’ by Roberto Surace, Ryan began climbing the ladder very quickly once he was sharing his production talents with the world. This summer has been a particularly busy one for the producer, as he supported Route 94 in the Button Factory, and embarked on a new Ibiza residency at Play 2.0.

Having originally built his fanbase on Soundcloud, Ryan Ennis has continued to garner big support during his electric real life gigs. At just 20 years old, the talent is absolutely storming the dance music space already, lining himself up as the next big talent to watch from Ireland. We had the awesome opportunity of chatting with Ryan and this is what he had to say:

Hey Ryan! Thanks for chatting with me today. Could you please introduce yourself for anyone that doesn’t know you?

Hi, thank you for having me. My name is Ryan Ennis, I am a 20 year old Producer and DJ from Dublin, Ireland. I also recently just released my first song ‘Close’ on Universal Music Ireland, which I am so excited about!

How’s your year going?

My year is going unreal. Aside from the music front, completing my college law degree really is allowing me to focus full time on my music and have that freedom to really expand on music to the fullest extent. The clubs being back open is just unreal and the reactions I am getting to my sets have been so positive, I’ve recently just sold out nights in Marbella, Magaluf and a few more which have just made the wait of lockdown seem so worth it! I also have some big things come this year so it is only rising and getting better

So you began sharing your first tracks during the pandemic, and initially established your listenership on Soundcloud. What was it like creating and releasing music during such a crazy time?

To be honest at the start the first couple of bootlegs I made were just for fun and when I saw the reaction they were getting it was a big shock, I had a lot of support in Ireland but seeing the music travel was mental. It also motivated me to become better and keep going as when the time came and we returned to normality I would have created a foundation for myself to play for when the time came.

You recently released your track ‘Close’, what was the inspiration behind the track, and what was the process of making it?

When I first heard the vocal, I fell in love with it, Michaela really smashed it, then when I started building around it and it just clicked. Funny enough, I made the whole track from my bedroom and kind of just got a flow when I started. I didn’t stop until I had sent over the first version which did not differentiate much from the final. The name ‘Close’ stuck then. You could say it was close to summer and marked the beginning as Close is my first track released on a major label.

You’ve been busy with live gigs recently, including your residency in Ibiza. How does it feel to get back in front of crowds again?

It is honestly unreal, I love gigging so much and traveling. It is even better getting to meet such great people all the while selling out the shows in Dublin and abroad. The Dublin shows are massive, I’ve recently headlined in the Button Factory which is based central in Dublin’s Temple Bar, a sold out show, very little has come close to the atmosphere in that place. It is unreal the crowd is mental.

What inspired you to get into music?

I have always had a strong interest in music since I was little, thanks to my DadI would like to think I have a very broad knowledge of music and I think this really helps me when it comes to producing as I aim to introduce elements from every genre into my songs and little bits that interest me. I started off liking rock bands like Guns N’ Roses and Oasis as I also played the guitar when I was younger but then when EDM started to take strength Avicii became a favorite for me.

Who are your biggest musical influences? Did any of them help to shape the music that you make?

Avicii is definitely one who I would say plays a major part in my music and how I go about my production as he is a person I looked up to and constantly watched videos to try to mimic his productions. Other influences would be the likes of Oasis on their musical talent and how they create music really showed me a way to make music in a different way other than on a laptop.

What are your hobbies outside of music and production?

I am a huge football fan so I like going to football matches with my brother and my Dad, I also love traveling and constantly being out doing things so most of my time is spent outside either going for a walk going the cinema or watching football, or if I’m lucky enough abroad, when I’m not in the studio creating music.

Who would be your dream collaboration in the future?

It’s a big question, of course there are the dream collabs such as MK, Calvin Harris, Joel Corry, all the DJs and producers I looked up to and listened to since I was younger. But also some serious vocalists such as Becky Hill would be massive. I can’t say much but I am currently in the works of collaborating with an Irish Duo who are absolutely smashing it at the minute, so keep an eye out for that, it is destined to be huge.

As an exciting new addition to the Irish house scene, what can we expect from you in the next year?

Things are really starting to pick up. The gigs are flying such as getting to do a set at this year’s Electric Picnic, arguably Ireland’s biggest festival which I am so excited about and I am creating so much music that I love so, expect a lot of tunes and some big gigs to be playing at!
