Exclusive Interview with UK House Prodigy Curbi & His New Release on Monstercat

Breakout house regulator Curbi makes his Monstercat debut with the brand new, melodic house record, “Breathe.” With a steady four-on-the-floor kick backed by distorted vocals and anthemic beats, it’s a high-energy ripper that explains why everyone’s talking about Curbi. Before Covid hit, the producer supported the likes of Steve Aoki and Oliver Heldens on tour, which led to releases on each of their respective labels.

In the past year alone, he linked up with Tchami on their hit track “Make Amends” and AC Slater on their bass house single, “Navigator.” Having played the world’s biggest stages including Tomorrowland, Mysteryland, and Creamfields, Curbi is effortlessly becoming a household name with more club-ready weapons in his arsenal.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Hey Curbi! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat to us here at Soundrive Music! Tell us about the first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since. How did you get started?

It was the track “Discharge”, my first release on Spinnin’. I sent this track to Oliver Heldens for show support but he was legendary enough to send it directly to Spinnin’ for them to check out. That’s where it all kicked off. Big love to Oliver!

Tell us about your latest project ‘Breathe’ on Monstercat

This is a song I’ve wanted to make for a long time. Something euphoric and melodic but with the crunch. I’m really happy with how it turned out because this song really captures how I envision the energy of life to be after this whole pandemic!

What single night out has been most memorable for you as a DJ and producer?

My first official show at Pacha in Ibiza, which was a night from Martin Solveig. Good times! I was still 16 then and didn’t even know the booth monitor was off the whole show.

Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?

“Cold” by Post Malone.

Dream collaboration and why?

I think nowadays it would probably have to be Skrillex. I look up to him a lot and everything that he has built.. not to mention his music – next level. Would love to see what would happen by doing a track with him.. no idea how it would sound, but I want to find out one day!

Who’s the one up-and-coming producer out of the UK that we should keep our eyes on?

SUBSHIFT.. he has some really cool deep tunes which I definitely recommend you check out! @subshiftmusic on Instagram.

How do you get a track started? Tell us about your production process

Always depends however, I usually start with a small vocal idea or chords. Easier to build a track with these foundations.

Upcoming future projects? What are you currently working on?

A lot of different music coming out… softer songs, harder songs, OG Curbi stuff, etc. I am also working on my YouTube channel again with an initiative called ‘The Pattern’, giving my track breakdowns, masterclasses, and all things music production. It’s a small side journey which I think could be really fun for myself and people who like my music 🙂

The relationship between a DJ and the audience is crucial, and yet it seems to be a fragile one – how do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?

I think a lot of people who listen to my music on a regular basis are quite open to new stuff, but of course I’m not always playing for those people so I have to give a good balance between familiar stuff and fresh stuff. You get the best of both worlds then.

Not slowing down Curbi released over twelve singles last year, working together with AC Slater, Cesqeaux, Mike Williams and RayRay. Curbi started a unique collaboration with Supercell for their mobile game ‘Brawl Stars’ which was a huge success. And 2021 is looking even brighter!

Curbi released his first release of 2021 called ‘Make Amends’ with Tchami. And Curbi already teased an upcoming collaboration with none other than Zedd! With all that he has in store this year, Curbi is the name to watch in the near future as he braces to get back to global touring.
