Exclusive Interview with Amsterdam DJ & Producer Duo Magnificence

Whether they are producing at home in the Netherlands or working with artists in a Miami studio, these two are serving up a seemingly endless stream of guest mixes, remixes, and bootlegs that are grabbing the attention of top talent everywhere. Soundrive Music had the immense pleasure of chatting with Dutch DJ & Producer duo Magnificence about their latest project on Tiesto’s ‘Musical Freedom Unlimited’ with the release of ‘Set Me Free‘ out now on all major streaming platforms. Check out what Magnificence had to say about it!

Tell us about that first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since. How did you get started?

The first song that we’ve released that we felt that was important was our release ‘Blackwolf’ together with Thomas Newson on Spinnin’ Records. It was the first song that was the start of the sound that we stand for and describes how we feel and experience house music.

‘Magnificence’ is a very interesting name. Please tell us what that name means to you and how you came up with it?

We were resident DJ’s in a local club where we live and the promoter told us that the name that we had back then was way too long for the posters, haha. He told us to pick a new name and we basically found this name. We both liked it and that’s how it started. We are still really happy with it so it was a great pick!

You have released music with an impressive list of established record labels like Spinnin’ Records, Revealed Recordings, Protocol Recordings & DOORN. Has it always been an easy task getting signed and what advice could you give to any up-and-coming producers looking to do the same?

Keep on going and don’t be afraid to put your music out there. Find other producers that you connect with and try to learn as much as possible from each other. Don’t feel sad if it didn’t work out like you had in mind, the music industry isn’t easy and the feeling that you have is something that lots of people experience. Believe in yourself and be proud on what you are doing.

Tell us something that we and your fans don’t know about you.

Robin is a professional yodeler and Maurice plays Elite Rank in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?

Tell us more about your latest upcoming project on Tiesto’s ‘Musical Freedom Unlimited’ and what can we expect?

Set Me Free’ got released on this great initiative from Musical Freedom, called ‘Musical Freedom Unlimited’. We have a lot of contact with Ayor and we felt that we had to combine our sounds together and that’s how ‘Set Me Free’ started.

If you could perform at any festival, which festival would it be and why?

The most important thing is that we see our fans enjoy our music and the most fans go to Tomorrowland, so because of that reason we would say Tomorrowland.

How do you get a track started? Tell us a bit about your production process. How long does it take you to complete a track on average and do you ever get writer’s / producers block?

It really depends on the song, there is no formula for a song. Some songs are finished within the same day and other songs take longer. We finish the most songs most of the time within a week. We also struggle with producer’s blocks, but it doesn’t have to be something negative. I think that producer’s blocks are a signal that you need to evaluate what you did and discover new sounds and experiences. Try to look and find other sounds and genres that you like and get your inspiration from that.

The relationship between the audience and the DJ / Producer is crucial, and yet it seems to be a fragile one – How do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?

The most important thing for us is that we feel confident with what we do. I think that it’s important to take your fans along on your journey of your career. People will understand who you are and how you work, so there will be much more understanding if you make certain choices.
