Exclusive Interview with Taipei Based Italian Producer Giorgio Leone

The latest release from Frequenza Records finds Taipei based Italian producer & founder of Our Muzik, Giorgio Leone, returning to the label for a new EP. He has showcased his music via Frequenza, Huambo Records, MisuMisu Records.

It’s been an incredible couple years stretch for the burgeoning artist Giorgio Leone. His recent release on Vulcano Records ‘My Love For you’ won industry wide praise from both DJs and press alike. Now embarking on his next musical project Giorgio Leone presents his latest creation entitled ‘We Overcome’. Released in August 2021, it once again showcases the artist’s keen sense of floor friendly beats.

Tell us about the first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since. How did you get started?

The first track I’ve released under a label is Call Me from the EP Infectious, I am motivated by emotions; when I am in the proper mood, my creativity emerges and I begin to dismiss new projects from my thoughts. I remember being quite anxious the day I recorded “Call Me” for the label Neu Gravity because of personal difficulties. When everything was finally resolved in the evening, I felt relieved and happy. That’s when I got the idea, and I spent the rest of the night working on the track.

I’ve always been passionate about music, and since I was a teenager in Italy, I’ve analyzed every aspect of it, including how to produce sounds and, subsequently, songs. I am an early self-learner, and this enthusiasm lead me to fall in love with the art of being a DJ and, later, a music producer. My hometown’s techno and house culture has had a big effect on me. I’ve wanted to make a profession out of publishing music and performing for over 10 years. After that, i moved to Taiwan where i founded a group “Our Muzik” that aims to spread Techno music in Taiwan and Asia. Our Muzik Records has even become the label i’m running.

Tell us about your latest project ‘We Overcome’

We overcome it is a Techno Peak/Time Driving track. The sharpened tools in creating kit have molded ‘We Overcome.’ The single’s foundation is laid by ferocious kicks, razor-sharp cymbals, and distorted synth rhythms, while the vocal line appears in a repetitive yet rare pattern. The thunderous bass is layered with a flurry of percussion sounds, resulting in an absolute monster of a track. The track is fast-paced from beginning to end, and it’s likely to set dance floors stomping and hearts racing when they slowly reopen on a worldwide scale.

Tell us something we wouldn’t normally find out about you?

Beside the crazy nights playing music, i am just a normal person dedicated to daily life and family.

What single night out has been most memorable for you as a dj and producer?

A DJ gig I did in 2020 at Nuzone, Taipei. I felt like I was playing the ideal set for the perfect crowd there. I’m picky about track selection, track order, and mixing, but it couldn’t have turned out any better. When I can play freely and express myself via the music in the manner I perceive or hear it. DJs are now expected to play short sets of 2 hours or less. I have always loved to extended sets (at least 3-4 hours) or All-Nighters since it allows me to spend more time with the audience, explore, and produce waves of emotions. When it comes to music, it’s critical to get into the correct frame of mind. Getting in the mood helps with any creative endeavor – if it feels like hard labor, it will be. You must be free of distractions, so turn off the internet, the doorbell, and your phone, as well as anything else that could disrupt your flow.

Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?

Speaking of nowadays music i’d say Fisher – I’m Losing it. This track it is still young but it really changed the tech house world introducing a new wave of style that will be remembered forever.

Dream collaboration and why?

As a tech house lover of course it would be with Fisher, the new wave he brought on the tech house music is incredible and a collaboration with him would be amazing in my opinion.

If you could play any festival, which would it be?

Definitely Ultra music festival.

How do you get a track started? tell us about your production process

Consider the following scenario. You’ve set aside some time to make music, your other half/kids/dog/phone are all locked out of the studio, and you’re finally sitting down at the computer, brimming with energy. It’s finally here: the moment you’ve been waiting for has arrived: it’s time to start working on a new tune. Take a song in the manner you desire and map out all the different portions of the track using arrangement marks in a DAW to make sure your songs remain moving.

After you’ve recorded a jam session, grab the midi file and select the portions that you think work, then begin composing a song. Put down a few chords or notes in the key you wish to be in, press record, and begin programming the sound.

Put down a few chords or notes in the key you wish to be in, press record, and begin programming the sound. A nice idea here is to make the sound more dynamic and musically intriguing by exaggerating it. To accomplish this, push the parameters you’re altering to their limits while programming so you can hear the entire effect. Once you’ve compiled a sufficient number of ideas, go back and cut up all of the sections that appeal to you.

One of the most common mistakes made while starting a track is failing to keep the arrangement moving ahead. This is how you become caught in the terrible 8-bar loop and can’t get out.

Upcoming projects? What are you currently working on?

I am working hard to release as many tracks as i can, before the end of this year i’ve at least other 2 releases, one with Vulkano Records at the end of october, and another one with Prospect Records, one is a tech house track and the other one is a Techno one.

The relationship between a dj and the audience is crucial, and yet is seems to be a fragile one – how do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?

It’s a fight as well as a collaboration. Of course, there are occasions when I go into a room and think with myself, “mmmm, that’s not going to be that easy,” and on such occasions, I may have to play a more continuous higher intensity for what I think to be a less musically experienced audience. After all, I’m being paid to even have fun with these folks.

But, you should never forget the power of the audience. When I’m in a position like the one described above, I might go in harder or more quickly to give them something they want, but I’ll become bored if I have to stay to a single pace or energy level all night, so I’ll progressively try to persuade them into other emotions, which generally, but not always, succeeds.
