Exclusive Interview With U.S Based Dubstep, Hardtrap and DNB Producer – Grisly

Grisly is an EDM DJ/Producer/Vocalist based out of Jacksonville, FL. He likes to incorporate heavy metal elements mixed with dubstep, hardtrap and DNB as well as live singing into his sound and sets.

Grisly puts out amazing energy throughout his live performances that lasts the whole show making it a must-see performance. He has performed with big names like Barely Alive, Phaseone, Riot Ten, Pixel Terror and many more and is a force to be reckon with on stage. His live sets are so energetic and powerful, that it sure makes it a show hard to forget. His involvement with the crowd is constant and keeps up the same energy from start to finish.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

1. Tell us about the first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since. How did you get started?

The track that really put me on the map is “Omertà” from my Omertà EP that was released in 2021. It is the track that I have gotten the best feedback on and the most streams as well. This track really put me on the map and showed people I am here for good.

2. Tell us about your latest project ‘Death Awaits’

My latest project was the track “Death Awaits” that came out Feb 24th, 2022. I really wanted to step outside the “rules” and “expectations” of current tracks in the EDM world and focus more on telling a story rather than just rushing to the drop. I really wanted to bring the listener through a journey. It is about how things always seem to go well but then bumps on the road can happen. If you listen to the track, the intro (which I made it to where people can use it as a festival intro) starts off very happy and emotional and then a big bass hit slaps the listener and that is when it gets extremely heavy with some great metal and dubstep sound design.

3. Tell us something we wouldn’t normally find out about you?

I actually speak 3 languages and I am 100% portuguese. I was born there and most people could never guess it.

4. What single night out has been most memorable for you as a dj and producer?

My most memorable night out in my career has to be when I played direct support for Phaseone. This guy is a beast and has everything dialed in perfectly and I look up to him a lot. I swear I was like a child at Disneyland watching his set and to be able to open up for him, was an absolute honor.

5. Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?

I will have to go with absolutely any track from Bring Me The Horizon’s album “Sempiternal”. I literally cannot pick just one, but it motivates me a lot on sound designing and song structure. Even though it’s not EDM, it still makes a lot of sense.

6. Dream collaboration and why?

My dream collaboration would have to be with Phaseone or Sullivan King. It will happen. I am manifesting it now.

7. If you could play any festival, which would it be?

I would love to play at Lost Lands. I just feel like it is the perfect festival for my sound.

8. How do you get a track started? tell us about your production process

I actually always start with the intro, verse, build-up, 2nd verse or build-up (depending if it has one), and the end of the track. I get those dialed in perfectly first so then when I write the drops, they make sense and it is like the icing on the cake!

9. Upcoming projects? What are you currently working on?

Yes! I have many for 2022. Not only have I decided to do a lot of collabs for 2022 but I want to be able to release singles that don’t follow the normal rules in EDM but also hit so hard that they make the listener not know what just happened (in a good way).

10. The relationship between a dj and the audience is crucial, and yet is seems to be a fragile one – how do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?

I have honestly been a huge fan of music and not only have I just enjoyed it, but I legitimately feel it and understand how and what a person needs to be blown away. You see it all the time where DJ’s will play drop after drop after drop and that is fantastic, but with my live performances, I want the crowd to go through a journey. I make my sets where you are headbanging non stop and the next minute you have goosebumps from an emotional part. I cover different bpm’s, and genres, and I think that is why the crowd interacts so well with me because I give them the unexpected. They get what they want (heavy bass) and then I take it away and give them something else that makes them in awe. I enjoy it. Afterall, music is an escape. I feel like drops and bangers after banger nonstop for an hour gets people tired after a while.
